Science Meets the Marina Market: A Unique Blend of Curiosity and Community in Cork
Cork’s Marina Market, known for its vibrant stalls and eclectic mix of food, art, and culture, recently became the site of a fascinating event that combined science and fun in a way that delighted attendees of all ages. Science at the Marina Market brought research and innovation into the heart of the community, proving that science doesn’t just belong in labs – it’s everywhere around us.
A Day of Discovery
From interactive experiments to engaging talks, the event showcased cutting-edge science in a relaxed and accessible setting. Visitors had the chance to step into the shoes of a scientist, learning about the mysteries of the universe, the marvels of the human body, and the wonders of the natural world.
One highlight was the “Inflatable Gut” exhibit from APC Microbiome, where visitors could get the sense of what the human digestive tract looks like from the inside. Another highlight was the large interactive art installation created by VistaMilk’s artist in residence Maria McKinney using recycled materials from the various Research Centres involved in the event.
A Community Effort
The event was made possible through a collaboration between local researchers, Cork-based universities, and science outreach organizations including Teagasc, VistaMilk, APC Microbiome, Tyndall Institue, UCC and IPIC. Their shared goal was to demystify science and show its impact on everyday life.
Eimear Ferguson, Science Communication and Engagement Officer from Teagasc and one of the lead organisers of the event, commented:
“We wanted to bring science to people in a way that feels approachable and relevant. The Marina Market is the perfect place for this – it’s about community, and science is all about improving lives in the community.”
Science for All
Science at the Marina Market was more than an event – it was an experience that sparked curiosity, encouraged learning, and brought people together. Whether you came for the food, the experiments, or just the lively atmosphere, one thing was clear: science truly is for everyone.
Thanks for all involved on the day for sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm for science.
